What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs, scientifically classified as Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus, are small, reddish-brown insects that belong to the family Cimicidae. They feed on the blood of animals and humans, and can be found in cracks and crevices, such as the seams of mattresses, furniture, and baseboards. Bed bugs are flat and oval-shaped, typically measuring about the size of an apple seed or 4-5 millimeters in length.

Bed bugs are known for their ability to hitchhike on people and their belongings, which is why they are commonly found in places with high traffic, such as hotels, dormitories, and apartments.

Why should I care about them? (They care about you)

Bed bugs are active at night, while you are sleeping (and many unsuspecting). They are active at night and can cause a variety of problems, including skin irritation, allergic reactions, and anxiety.

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of, as they can survive for long periods of time without feeding and are resistant to many pesticides. Therefore, prevention is key when it comes to bed bugs. By being vigilant when traveling or staying in unfamiliar places, inspecting used furniture and clothing, and taking other preventative measures, you can avoid a bed bug infestation in your home.

Why is prevention key?

Prevention is key when it comes to bed bugs because they can be notoriously difficult to get rid of once they have infested a home or building. Bed bugs are very good at hiding and can survive for long periods of time without feeding, making them difficult to detect and eliminate. Additionally, many bed bugs have developed resistance to common pesticides, which further complicates the extermination process. By taking preventative measures, such as inspecting your belongings for bed bugs and being vigilant when traveling or staying in unfamiliar places, you can avoid a bed bug infestation in the first place, saving yourself the trouble and expense of having to deal with them later.

My Story

I never thought it could happen to me, but it did. I was living in what I thought was a clean and tidy apartment when I noticed some random rashes on my body after waking up. I didn't think much of it at first, but they started getting bigger and more frequent. Then, one night, my girlfriend stayed over and we woke up to discover hundreds of tiny bugs crawling around on the bed. I was horrified to find out that they were bed bugs.

Infestations happen quick!

I quickly started researching online on how to get rid of them, but the information was overwhelming and often involved harsh chemicals. So, I started to look into ways to prevent bed bugs from infesting my home in the first place. I gathered information and products to take proactive measures against them, so I wouldn't have to deal with this nightmare again.

Now, I want to share what I learned with others to help prevent them from experiencing the same problem. Bed bugs can happen to anyone, regardless of how clean their home is. So, be vigilant when traveling or staying in a hotel, inspect your luggage and clothing before bringing them inside, and always check used furniture and clothing for signs of bed bugs. If you do find them in your home, don't try to handle the problem on your own. It's best to call a professional exterminator to eliminate them completely.

By taking proactive measures and being aware of the signs of bed bugs, you can avoid a lot of trouble, time, and money. Don't let bed bugs ruin your peace of mind - take action before it's too late.

So to help others I put together a short list of proactive products to help others avoid what I went through.

My Prevention Checklist:

Disclaimer: Please note that while I may receive compensation for any purchases made through my affiliate links, I cannot be held responsible for any sudden urges to buy everything you see. Exercise caution and only purchase what you need. After all, a house full of unnecessary purchases won't protect you from bed bugs or any other pesky problems.

Mattress Cover and Protector

Purchasing a mattress cover acted as a barrier and made it easier to detect and eliminate any bed bugs that may have been present. Not only did it provide me with peace of mind, but it also helped me prevent a full-blown bed bug infestation in my home. It's a small investment that can save you a lot of trouble and hassle down the road. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to prevent bed bugs.

Bed Frame Coasters

Bed Frame Coasters can be an effective tool in preventing bed bugs from getting to you. By placing them under the legs of your bed, you create a barrier that bed bugs cannot cross, as they are unable to climb slippery surfaces. This prevents them from crawling up the legs of your bed and reaching you. Coasters are an easy and affordable solution that can help protect you from a bed bug infestation.

Metal Bed Frame (Not a must)

I was a male in his late 20s and although the wooden bed frame served its purpose it also was a great hiding spot for bed bugs. After defeating them once, I was not willing to risk it again so I uprgraded to this metal bed frame which I've been happy about.  Although this is not a required proactive measure, it was a great purchase that was helpful in preventing future unwanted guests so I stand by my recommendation.
